One for the optimists!!

It is the season of optimism around me! Spring has arrived and it promises a wonderful summer. Down under our cricket team is doing marvelous too and with the semi-final match awaited, we are high on confidence and optimistic to win it.

Before today’s question which would come from the world of hopes and optimism, I want to share a personal story which is a source of inspiration to me. Cracking IIT in India is always a big dream for any middle class Indian household. A 11th class guy give up everything to get into those coveted colleges. like all others , I also aspired to be one of those lucky few to get in there. Hence I started preparing for JEE. Being a good student till class 10th, my parents had loads of expectations from me, but then JEE being JEE, I was finding it very tough to adjust to the rigours of learning and there came a point when I gave up studying. It was October of my Class 12th and I had bunked the class for umpteenth number of time for a reason I didnt know. My parents and specially my mom was realizing what was happening but she had not said anything to me.

It was that day that she decided to broach the topic with me. She asked me why I looked so disturbed and why I have stopped going to classes.Somewhere she already knew everything, but just that she didnt want to talk about it for so long. I told her that I absolutely dont understand anything in the class and my ego is terribly hurt and morale totally down. I told her that I feel I am good for nothing.

It was then that my Mom told me that JEE is not the end of the world. There are lot many good things in  life. She asked me to discontinue it if I want but she also asked me to give one last shot at it. A whole hearted last shot. I agreed and I studied hard for the next 6 months and with little bit of luck and Moms blessings managed to get into VNIT, Nagpur.

Even today when I think of that day, I am filled with optimism and that conversation helps me derive strength in toughest of times.

So coming to the question for today, An author was rejected multiple times by many publishers as they thought that her content was too violent for kids. Nobody believed in her abilities and was ready to back her. It was then that a friend of her loaned her 2000 Pounds and asked her to just sit and complete the story without worrying about anything else. It was the confidence of this friend that helped her derive strength. Name this award winning author.

And as we talk of optimism and hope, buying or renting a house for many is a dream in this country and in this process there are companies like who help people achieve their dreams.

For those small joys of happiness!

Before today’s question I want to write about a question which many people ask us-the quizzers!!  From elders to peers to the younger ones, all of those who don’t quiz have asked me a question on seeing my enthusiasm for quizzing and I am sure most of the quizzers can also relate with me. It is Kya mazaa ata hai is mai??( What exactly do you enjoy out of answering those silly question)

To all those I want to say, quizzing is not about mugging up 3 books and reproducing those answers in a quiz. It is not about knowing more than others or for that matter knowing random, non sense stuff and taking pride in it. Quizzing is a process and a journey. It is a journey of knowledge  and taking joy in getting aware with that piece of knowledge. It is about appreciating a fact and being cognizant about it.

Yes I agree these are small joys. For others trivial small joys, but then for people like me it means everything. It is never about winning or losing. It never was.In fact of the 10 quiz I participate i end up on stage of one, leave aside winning all of them. Yet I always ensure I dont miss any of the quiz in my vicinity. I do all this because these are small moments of joys for me and I want to celebrate and enjoy them.

So talking of small joys and celebrating them, I cant think of anything else but Coca Cola.( The quizzer in me wakes up :)) Coca cola has always stood for celebrating small joys themselves and have promoted it. Time and again they have come up with one after another campaign to spread happiness. Be it the Middle east campaign connecting Indians working there with their family back home or the the campaign to connect Indians and Pakistan and spread happiness, each have been heart warming. Some of their campaigns like the one below asks us to indulge in coke and experience the taste of it. Have a look

The campaign beautifully shows The gorgeous Alia Bhatt and Crowd favourite Siddharth Malhotra enjoying Coca cola. It is indeed a small joy of life to sit with your loved ones and relish something that you like. Thank you Coca Cola.

For more updates and info you can refer their pages. Link is below. You will find many beautiful advertisements over there, have a good time!!

So coming to more smaller joys of life. Posting todays question on the happiness theme, like Coca Cola there are many other brands which use happiness as their core positioning and advertise around it? Could you name 3 of them. For extra points, also tell me their taglines.

Breakfasts of the champions!!

Today’s question comes with a unique story associated. It is a story close to all of our hearts as it has food associated with it. Yeah you have got it right! We all love food rite…of all tastes…of all sizes..but we dont really think how much nutritional value they are giving.

Experts say the most important part of any diet is the breakfast one has! They advise us to have wholesome, heavy breakfast.

As a young kid I never worried about what breakfast I am getting. My mom was super attentive when it came to me having the right intake. However once I left the cozy confines of my house and went to Bangalore for my first job, life changed drastically. Leave aside taking variety of breakfast, there were days when I used to even skip them. Sometimes for lack of time, and sometimes out of the monotony of having the same Dosa-Idli.

However one day I got a wake up call when I almost fell down as I felt famished. That day A friend of mine advised me to explore the amazing world of corn flakes and specifically of Kelloggs. And that I did indeed and I have never skipped a breakfast from then. Sometimes with milk, sometimes with water, I have had it in all flavours. Just like the ad shown, even my friends come to me when they are hungry and want to have a quick nutritional dose.

I would also like to share an interesting story which just happened yesterday. One of my friend was going to run a marathon( 7 Km one). He is not really a cornflakes fan, however early morning he did not have anything else to eat, so came to me for a quick bite. I offered him Kelloggs chocos with milk and to our utter surprise he not just loved the taste but also he felt so energitic that he was able to complete the marathon in a record 37 minutes( a person al best for him). This is why I call corn  Flakes Breakfasts of the champions.

Thus over the years Kelloggs with its multiple flavours has become an integral part of my life, and you would always find myself full of the stock. Thank you Kelloggs. This post is specifically to thank you and what you mean for me in my life. If you also like me have a special place for Kelloggs in your heart, visit these links and share the joy.

Now coming to todays question. Kelloggs is a part of diet of many champions . But there is one swimming champion, known for his multiple medals and world records who also is a huge Kelloggs fan. Name him. Also for brownie points, name the founder of kelloggs.

Story Time- One for our togetherness!!

Starting from today, we will be posting some questions in the form of stories. After all, all good questions have a good story behind them. As a quizzer we have always cherished those questions which come with such interesting stories.

This would be our attempt to frame such interesting story questions. Hope you enjoy them!!

This blog post comes at a very apt time. Me and my elder brother have toiled really hard for the prestigious TATA Crucible which is 2 days away now. Whether we win or lose there is something which does not matter now, because for us the journey of preparation itself is a victory in itself, and the fact that we are #together in this event means a lot. Maybe the last time for us together as both would take different paths post our MBA. He would head to a banking world with opportunity from the company with the hexagon logo calling him, whereas I would head to Chennai for a new start to my career in IT world. Life for me in Chennai would definitely be challenging, but with so many fantastic innovations coming up like, I am pretty relaxed.

Quizzing for us was our first love. I remember being exposed to the world of questions by my brother. He made me more keen about what was happening in the outside world. In our school days we won a lot of quiz together. Golden days so to say.

However coming to VNIT changed things. I still remember the first quiz i attended there. I could get a mere 4 questions out of 25 and the cut-off for the quiz was a whopping 16!! Came like a bolt from the blue to me. My brother being in different college, we could no longer partner. For the next 3 years, I failed to reach even the podium once, let aside winning a quiz. However things were to change in the final year. Me and my b other had again came #together and were going to take on other quizzers in the annual quiz fest. It remains one of the most memorable day of my life. With close to 200 teams participating competition was tough. However together we were and as luck would have it, we went on to win the sports quiz and did decently in other quizzes as well. It indeed gave us confidence to look up.

Few years later in the strangest of coincidence, both of us managed to get seats in the prestigious JBIMS, Mumbai.( 2 out of the 9 seats). Last 2 years have been amazing with few podiums. Indeed #together we rock. Now that we sit waiting for the last quiz of our student career we do get nostalgic.

So coming to the question for today. Like us there are many sets of brothers who have done amazingly #together. One such set of brothers from  Punjab went on to set up a huge company by starting in 1943. Which company or the brothers am I talking about who have recently signed Tiger Woods as their brand ambassador?
