The Guy shown in the picture is Robert Recorde. He entered the University of Oxford in about 1525, and was elected a fellow of All Souls College in 1531. Having adopted medicine as a profession, he went to the University of Cambridge to take the degree of M.D. in 1545.
Thus it was obvious that this guy would have great future in medical world and that he did have, after all he did go to London, and acted as physician to King Edward VI and to Queen Mary.
But the single greatest thing that Robert Recorde left behind was indeed great and definitely not very much linked to the field of medicine .Rather he changed mathematical notation forever. He invented something which he called “Gemowe lines” .
About his invention he said that he has done it to avoid the tedious repetition of a particular phrase .
My question is what is the contribution of this doctor that we are talking about which no engineer can live without?
